Therapy Myths in South Asian Culture
Have you ever considered individual counseling? South Asian mental health is often a taboo topic, and we tend to have a lot of misconceptions about therapy in our communities as a result. In this episode we dispel the following misconceptions:
- Only those who are sick or ill seek out therapy, it’s a ‘first world’ act
- You should be able to talk to your friends/family instead of a therapist
- Therapy doesn’t work (plus, a bit about discussing therapy with your family)
- A therapist will judge you
- Therapy is expensive
I also share several resources, including for affordable / virtual therapy:
- Psychology Today
- Directory of South Asian Therapists
- The Mood Space
- Betterhelp
- TalkSpace
- Open Path Collective
